Timelessness

Trends are how interfaces expire.

You can carbon-date an interface. Skeuomorphic leather: 2011. Long shadows: 2014. Glassmorphism: 2021. Every aesthetic that arrives as a wave leaves as one, and it takes your product's credibility with it - an interface styled by trend announces its own age the way a haircut does.

Shu Ding's essays keep returning to Dieter Rams: good design is honest, unobtrusive, long-lasting. Note what's not on the list - novel, current, impressive. Rams designed radios that look contemporary fifty years later by refusing to design them to look contemporary at all.

What actually ages well

  • Structure over surface. Hierarchy, spacing, alignment, and rhythm read the same in any decade. The Swiss grid is pushing eighty.
  • Function-shaped decisions. The Dynamic Island earned its shape - it wraps a physical sensor cutout. The imitations that copied the pill onto screens without one copied the fashion and left the reason; those aged in months.
  • Honest materials. Text that looks like text, buttons that look pressable. Effects that pretend depth or texture the platform doesn't have are the first thing to curdle.
  • Restraint. Almost nothing on a monochrome, type-led interface can expire. This is half of why terminal aesthetics keep coming back.

Not a ban on style

Timelessness isn't beige. It's asking, before adopting anything: would this decision still make sense if the trend around it vanished? Borrow from waves freely - but only the parts you can justify without pointing at what everyone else shipped this quarter. Trends are a reason to examine a technique, never a reason to use one.
